A slow website is a leak you cannot see. Here is what speed really means, in plain terms, and how to know if yours is costing you.

Most owners never see their slow site the way a first time visitor does. You load it from your own phone, on your own connection, from the cache. A stranger on a mid range phone and a weak signal has a very different experience, and if it makes them wait, they leave. Speed is not a vanity metric. It is the difference between a click and a customer.

Why speed decides the sale

  • People bounce fast. A large share of visitors abandon a page that takes more than a few seconds to load. They do not complain, they just go to your competitor.
  • Google ranks fast sites higher. Speed is a direct ranking signal. A slow site fights uphill for every position.
  • Slow feels untrustworthy. A page that stutters and jumps reads as amateur before a visitor has read a word. Fast feels professional.

What Core Web Vitals actually measure

Core Web Vitals are three numbers Google uses to grade real world experience. In plain terms:

  • LCP (largest contentful paint): how long until the main thing on screen appears. This is the "is it loading" moment. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (interaction to next paint): how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. This is the "is it reacting" moment. Fast is under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS (cumulative layout shift): how much the page jumps around as it loads. A button that moves just as you tap it is a high CLS. You want it near zero.

How to tell if your site is slow

Run your address through Google PageScore. It gives you a score out of 100 and the three vitals above, for both mobile and desktop. If the mobile score is below the mid 90s, or any vital is in the red, you are losing visitors you never knew you had. Test on mobile, because that is where most of your customers are and where slow sites hurt most.

Speed problems are usually a handful of culprits: oversized images, heavy page builders and plugins, no caching, and code that blocks the page from painting.
